Alar Reduction

Honest consultation and natural results without overcorrection: Face Plus Alar Reduction

When the nostril wings are thick or spread out, the nostrils look large and the nasal tip looks wide, giving a heavy impression. Depending on the cause of the wide-looking nostril wings, correction can be done by reducing or gathering the skin of the alar rim. Alar reduction is the surgery that reduces the overall width of the nostril wing area and the width of the nostrils. It is not a surgery that changes the height of the nostrils or lets you control the shape however you wish.

FacePlus Alar Reduction Method — When Reducing the Skin of the Alar Rim

Removing skin from beneath the alar rim and gathering it together

Removing skin from beneath the alar rim and gathering it together

When the alar rim itself is wide, this method removes skin from beneath it and gathers it together. The incision follows the boundary between the alar rim and both cheeks, so the scar is barely visible.

If needed, combining nasal tip surgery or columella (the pillar located between the nostrils) surgery can achieve a refined nasal tip line.

Alar Reduction Incision Scar

In conclusion, it is not possible to have no incision scar at all, but because the incision is made in a position that is hardly visible, it is rare for the scar to be so noticeable that it becomes a problem.

If you lift the nostril wing, the boundary between the nostril wing and the cheek looks like a line, just like a scar. Because the incision is made at exactly that position, the incision scar after alar reduction surgery is not very noticeable.

The size of the incision scar can also be controlled to some extent. The incision must not simply be made large and long. It must be made accurately and effectively only where it is needed. Of course, because of individual differences, the position and length of the incision scar and the amount of tissue removed will inevitably differ. The incision line is designed to lie at the boundary where the nostril wing meets the face.

Originally, alar reduction was a surgery added as a supplement to rhinoplasty.

So it is mostly done together with rhinoplasty, but recently alar reduction on its own is also very common. Compared with typical rhinoplasty, alar reduction is relatively simple. When the nostrils are wide and large, it is a surgery that reduces the size of the nostrils themselves. The operation takes less than 30 minutes, and swelling and bruising are not severe, so the recovery period is not long either.

However, alar reduction is not possible in every case. On actual examination, there are often differences from what the patient who was considering alar reduction thought. At first glance the whole nostril wing area may look wide, but when observed closely from below, the nostrils may be small. Because the nostrils must not become any smaller, we cannot recommend alar reduction.

And in most cases the nostril wing area and the nasal tip are both blunt and wide, as is the case for most East Asians. Notably, alar reduction is often performed together with nasal tip cartilage tying. Nasal tip cartilage tying is simpler than typical nasal tip surgery. So it is considered together when a patient wants a change in appearance that is not large.

Alar reduction is not possible in every case just because the nostril wings are wide. If the nostrils are also large and wide, and the overall width of the nostril wings is wide, this surgery is very effective.

However, there are cases where the overall width of the nostril wings is wide but the nostrils are small. This is mainly when the flesh of the nostril wing area is thick... In that case, the nostrils must not be reduced any further, so alar reduction cannot be done. The thickness of the flesh cannot be adjusted either. In such cases, another method must be used to reduce the whole nostril wing.

Heavy overcorrection is hard to put right. The nostril area in particular can easily end up looking awkward, so overcorrection is best avoided at all costs.
